Bully FAQ

What is an American Bully?

The American Bully is a companion breed of dog that originated in the United States 20+ years ago.  It is not a pit bull and it was not created for fighting, although The American Pit Bull Terrier was used in its creation.  Other breeds known to be used are Staffordshire Terriers, Bulldogs, and - for the XL bully - mastiffs, but other breeds are known/suspected to be used as well.

I really do not understand all these types and sizes of American Bully.

ABKC which was the founding registry recognizing four types:  Pocket, Standard, Classic, and XL.  These types vary primarily by size and build.  Exotic bullies are not recognized by or shown in ABKC or UKC.  In UKC all sizes are shown in the same ring, at least at this time.  There are registries that do accept Exotics, Nanos, and Micros.

Are American Bullies good family dogs?

Yes, well bred socialized and properly trained American Bullies can be great family dogs with careful educated and supervised children.  See our article on American Bullies as family dogs for more info.

Are American Bullies aggressive?

American Bullies are not ever supposed to be aggressive to humans.  They can be dog aggressive, same gender aggressive, food and toy guarding behavior, and sometimes unpredictable with other animals.  Socializing with other dogs and animals can help as well as common sense protocols of feeding separately, toys only when supervised, and crating or kenneling dogs when you are absent.  It's better to prevent a problem than to have one!

What health issues are common in American Bullies?  Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, heart issues, and ataxia are common health issues.  More about health here!

What amount of exercise do American Bullies need?  We have some dogs who are athletically built and inclined who need quite a bit of exercise, whether that be on the treadmill or chasing a ball or running.  We have other larger heavier bulls who do not require a lot of exercise.

What should I feed my American Bully?  Due to the issues with premium foods this year, our vet and Joe came up with a plan to go with Good Friends, a small run 30/20 dog food by Nutrena.  Although not first on my list of premium foods, this food has not had problems - it is the old River Run.  It works out very well with our Chef Paw where we make a supplementary food out of fresh meat, vegetables and supplements.  We use the NativePet supplements, Winpro, fish oil, coconut oil, turmeric and beef broth.

Are American Bullies smart and easy to train?  Overall, YES!  There are some individuals who are much more compliant and eager than others.  The more athletic dogs are going to be more interested in more active sports.

How do I groom my American Bully?  Regular brushing and nail trims plus baths as needed.  We use Aminoflex shampoo.

Is it legal to own an American Bully?  Please check your state, city and county before you purchase an American Bully.  Even if it does not mention American Bullies but says "pit bull" you may have a problem.  Authority figures sometimes just don't know the difference.  If you live in a community, please also check your HOA.  If you are a renter, please check with your landlord.

My aunt Karen/neighbor Karen/idiot Karen on the internet says American Bullies are not a real breed.  Well, she's wrong.  They are a 20+ year old breed and are now even recognized by UKC and have a stud book, a national breed club, and standard.
